The word extension is derived from the LATIN roots “TENSIO” meaning stretching and “EX” meaning out.
Extension education is stretched out into the villages and fields beyond the limits of the schools and colleges to which the formal type of education is normally confirmed.
That the word extension came to be used in the sense, originally in USA in evident from the meaning given to it in “Webster’s dictionary” as a branch of university proper.
In other words “extension” used in this context signifies an out-of-school system of education .and the word extension is commonly to understand and “to extend” new ideas, practices.
You cannot apply yesterday’s methods to-day and be (in) business tomorrow. The need to obvious especially for the agriculture predominant in rural economy with its major component of agriculture, to keep the wish the brisk changes, characteristics of modern times. In other words the rural people should know and adopt useful research findings from time to time and also transmit their problem to the research workers for solution.
The researcher’s neither have the time nor are they equipped for the job of persuading the villages to adopt scientific methods and to ascertain from them, the rural problems on the other hand, it is impracticable for the millions of farmers to visit the research centre/stations and learn things by themselves. Thus an agency is required to bridge the gulf between the research workers and the people at large, to plug a dual role of interpreting the results of research to the farmers, in such a way that they accept and adopt the recommendation, as well as of conveying the farmer’s problems to the research station for a solution. The agency is termed as “extension” and the personnel managing the agency/organisation are called “extension workers”
To be successful an extension workers should know not merely “what” to teach but “how” to teach people. In other words, it is not enough if he is equipped with the technical knowledge he should have the ability to successfully communicate his ideas to the people, taking the personnel, social and situation factors into consideration
